The Dodgers have never owned the San Francisco Giants as much as they have owned them this season.
The Dodgers are 15-4 against the Giants in 2022. It is the most times the Dodgers have beaten the Giants in one season since they started playing each other in 1884.
The Dodgers have won seven games in a row against the Giants, including 4-3 in extra innings on Sunday night in a rain-delayed game at Oracle Park on Sunday.
It seemed even the baseball gods were trying to make the Dodgers domination stop.
But extra innings, which have been the Dodgers kryptonite over the past two seasons, were not enough to stop the Dodgers winning ways.
The Dodgers swept the Giants in the three-game weekend series and outscored the Giants 16-5 in those three games.
And the Dodgers are 13-1 against the Giants in their past 14 games. It’s been a pretty lopsided rivalry this season.
In Sunday’s game, Mookie Betts broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the 10th inning. The Dodgers scored two runs in the 10th to take a 4-2 lead. Max Muncy drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the other run.
The Giants scored a run in the bottom of the 10th. Dodgers closer Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth inning to send the game into extra innings. He earned the win, and perhaps more importantly, the confidence of manager Dave Roberts as the playoffs approach. The jury is still out on how much confidence Dodger fans have in Kimbrel, who has been shaky at best in the ninth inning. He has 22 saves, but has blown five and lost six games.
Justin Bruihl got the last out of the game in the 10th inning to earn the first save of his career.
Andrew Heaney started the game for the Dodgers. He pitched four shutout innings before the game was delayed 20 minutes because of rain. He was pulled out of the game after the delay, a decision made in part because of his injury history, but he didn’t go quietly.
“If you don’t want to win the game you shouldn’t be playing,” Heaney told the Associated Press after the game. “It’s as simple as that. You play to pitch well, hit well, do whatever it takes to win the baseball game. You don’t ever go out there and not try your best.”
That’s nice to hear from the fourth starter in the rotation.
The Dodgers won their 100th game of the season on Saturday. They have 101 wins and there are 17 games left in the season for the Dodgers to break their franchise record of 106 wins.
They are also in reach of breaking the major league record for wins in a season at 116.
The Dodgers have to go 16-1 the rest of the way to break that record. It’s too bad they can’t play the Giants for those 17 games.
Dodger starters power rankings:
- Clayton Kershaw
- Julio Urias
- Tyler Anderson
- Dustin May
- Andrew Heaney
The Dodgers start a five-game series, including a doubleheader on Tuesday, against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. They finish the week with a three-game weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Interesting side note, former Dodger and Cardinals great Albert Pujols has 698 career home runs. He is on the verge of becoming only the fourth player in major league history to hit 700 career home runs and could do it in Dodger Stadium this weekend.
